Terms of Service
These are the terms for using Lamplight. They are short on purpose. Using the app means you agree to them.
The short version
- Lamplight is free to use, and you can use it without signing up. Lamplight Plus is an optional subscription that opens more rooms, their weathers, and music from any room.
- Be decent in the shared rooms. They are quiet places other people are sitting in.
- Photos you put in your desk frame stay on your phone. Your desk data is yours, and you can delete it in the app.
- The rooms, the art, and the music are licensed for use inside the app.
- The app is provided as it is, and one person makes it.
What Lamplight is
Lamplight is an app for iPhone and iPad. You choose a painted room, your desk lamp comes on, and other people working in that room appear as their lamps. It includes a desk that remembers you, optional focus sessions, and a soundscape for each room.
Who provides it
Lamplight is made and operated by Alishan Noorani, an individual developer in Houston, Texas. In these terms, "we" and "I" both mean that one person. You can reach me at hello@lamplight.place.
Your license to the app itself comes from Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. These terms add the rules for the service, the rooms, and Lamplight Plus. Where the two conflict about the license, Apple's agreement wins.
Using the app
Lamplight is free to download and use. You do not need an account. If you want your desks to follow you to another device, you can sign in with your email address and a one-time code. That sign-in is optional, and everything in the app works without it. What we do with an email address is described in the privacy policy.
You are responsible for keeping access to the email address you sign in with. If you lose it, write to me and I will help as best I can.
Acceptable use
The shared rooms are exactly that: shared. When you sit in one, other people are sitting there too. So, in plain terms, you agree that you will not:
- Disrupt a room or the people in it, including by flooding, spoofing, or automating presence.
- Scrape, harvest, or bulk-collect anything from the service.
- Attack, overload, or probe the servers, or try to reach parts of them that are not yours.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app or the service, except where the law says you may do so regardless of this agreement.
- Use Lamplight to break the law, or to help anyone else do it.
If someone is using the service in a way that harms the rooms or the people in them, I may limit or end their access.
Your content
A photo you place in your desk frame is copied into the app's own storage on your device. It is never uploaded, and it stays yours. Your desk data, the plant, the species you chose, the small personalizations, is yours too. You can remove all of it from inside the app: open the lobby, tap the gear at the top right, and use the control at the foot of "Your account". It reads "Delete my account" when you are signed in, and "Erase my desks" when you are a guest.
The rooms, the art, and the music
The rooms, the illustrations, the interface, the name, and the original music are mine, and are licensed to you for personal use inside the app only. That license does not let you extract, copy, redistribute, resell, or reuse the art or the music elsewhere, including as a backdrop for other work or in another app.
The ambient sounds bundled with the app (rain, thunder, fire, chimes, and similar) are licensed from third parties for use as part of Lamplight. They are not offered as downloadable sound files, and extracting them from the app is not permitted.
The service can change
Lamplight is a living app. Rooms, sounds, and features may be added, altered, or retired, and the service may be paused or discontinued. I will try to give reasonable notice of anything that would take away something you rely on, but I do not promise any particular uptime, availability, or that the app will always be free of faults. If the service ends, you can still delete your data first, and I will say so in the app or on this site.
Lamplight Plus
Lamplight Plus is an optional subscription. It opens the rooms beyond the free ones, their weathers, music from any room, and the rooms that come later. Nothing you need to sit and work is behind it: the free rooms, focus sessions, your desk, and the room sounds stay free. If you sat for at least a minute in one of the rooms that were free before Plus arrived, that room stays open to you without it. Deleting your account or erasing your desks also ends this.
Plus is sold through the App Store as an auto-renewing subscription, billed monthly or yearly. The price is shown in the app and on the App Store sheet before you confirm, in your local currency. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase, or at the end of a free trial if you started one.
Renewal. The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends.
Cancelling. You can cancel any time in Settings on your device: tap your name, then Subscriptions. "Manage subscription" in the app's Settings takes you there. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Plus until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app, erasing your desks, or deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; billing continues through Apple until you cancel.
Free trial. When a free trial is offered, it is shown on the purchase sheet. The trial converts to a paid subscription at the end of the trial period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. If you switch plans during a trial, any unused part of the trial may end. One trial per Apple Account. Plus is not shared through Family Sharing.
Codes. From time to time I may give out codes that open Plus for a set period. A code is redeemed through the App Store, and what it gives is shown when you redeem it. A code is for the person I gave it to; please do not post or resell them.
Refunds and changes. Purchases, renewals, and refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store's terms. Refund requests go to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If the price of Plus changes, Apple will tell you beforehand, and the change takes effect only at a later renewal, with any consent Apple requires. If Plus is discontinued, you keep it until the end of the period you have paid for.
Tips. The app also has a tip jar. A tip is a one-time purchase through the App Store, buys nothing, and is not refundable except as Apple allows. Thank you.
No warranty
Lamplight is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You use it at your own discretion.
Limits on liability
Said plainly: if the app misbehaves, loses your desk, or is unavailable, I am not liable for indirect or consequential losses such as lost work, lost time, lost data, or lost profits. Since Lamplight is a small service, any liability I do have for a claim relating to the app is capped at the greater of what you paid me through the App Store in the twelve months before the claim or twenty-five US dollars. Some places do not allow these limits, so they apply only to the extent the law permits. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the current version will always live at this page, with its effective date above.
