Terms of Service
These are the terms for using Lamplight. They are short on purpose. Using the app means you agree to them.
The short version
- Lamplight is free, and you can use it without an account.
- Be decent in the shared rooms. They are quiet places other people are sitting in.
- Photos you put in your desk frame stay on your phone. Your desk data is yours, and you can delete it in the app.
- The rooms, the art, and the music are licensed for use inside the app.
- The app is provided as it is, and one person makes it.
What Lamplight is
Lamplight is an app for iPhone and iPad. You choose a painted room, your desk lamp comes on, and other people working in that room appear as their lamps. It includes a desk that remembers you, optional focus sessions, and a soundscape for each room.
Who provides it
Lamplight is made and operated by Alishan Noorani, an individual developer in Houston, Texas. In these terms, "we" and "I" both mean that one person. You can reach me at hello@lamplight.place.
Using the app
Lamplight is free to download and use. You do not need an account. If you want your desks to follow you to another device, you can sign in with your email address and a one-time code. That sign-in is optional, and everything in the app works without it. What we do with an email address is described in the privacy policy.
You are responsible for keeping access to the email address you sign in with. If you lose it, write to me and I will help as best I can.
Acceptable use
The shared rooms are exactly that: shared. When you sit in one, other people are sitting there too. So, in plain terms, you agree that you will not:
- Disrupt a room or the people in it, including by flooding, spoofing, or automating presence.
- Scrape, harvest, or bulk-collect anything from the service.
- Attack, overload, or probe the servers, or try to reach parts of them that are not yours.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app or the service, except where the law says you may do so regardless of this agreement.
- Use Lamplight to break the law, or to help anyone else do it.
If someone is using the service in a way that harms the rooms or the people in them, I may limit or end their access.
Your content
A photo you place in your desk frame is copied into the app's own storage on your device. It is never uploaded, and it stays yours. Your desk data, the plant, the species you chose, the small personalizations, is yours too. You can remove all of it from inside the app: open the lobby, tap the "?" at the top right, and use the control at the foot of that sheet. It reads "delete my account" when you are signed in, and "erase my desks" when you are a guest.
The rooms, the art, and the music
The rooms, the illustrations, the interface, the name, and the original music are mine, and are licensed to you for personal use inside the app only. That license does not let you extract, copy, redistribute, resell, or reuse the art or the music elsewhere, including as a backdrop for other work or in another app.
The ambient sounds bundled with the app (rain, thunder, fire, chimes, and similar) are licensed from third parties for use as part of Lamplight. They are not offered as downloadable sound files, and extracting them from the app is not permitted.
The service can change
Lamplight is a living app. Rooms, sounds, and features may be added, altered, or retired, and the service may be paused or discontinued. I will try to give reasonable notice of anything that would take away something you rely on, but I do not promise any particular uptime, availability, or that the app will always be free of faults. If the service ends, you can still delete your data first, and I will say so in the app or on this site.
Premium features
Lamplight is free today. Paid options may be introduced later for atmosphere: extra rooms, extra soundscapes, seasonal themes. If that happens, what is included and what it costs will be described in the app before you buy anything, and purchases will run through the App Store under Apple's own terms and refund process.
No warranty
Lamplight is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You use it at your own discretion.
Limits on liability
Said plainly: if the app misbehaves, loses your desk, or is unavailable, I am not liable for indirect or consequential losses such as lost work, lost time, lost data, or lost profits. Since Lamplight is free, any liability I do have for a claim relating to the app is capped at the greater of what you paid for it (which is nothing) or twenty-five US dollars. Some places do not allow these limits, so they apply only to the extent the law permits. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the current version will always live at this page, with its effective date above.
